"T.K." Turning Mandrels by Backlash Tools

These mandrels are patterned after the ones Tom Kirkman has made for himself for many years.  The  "TK" Turning Mandrels are now made here at Backlash Tools, this way I can make sure each mandrel meets my quality standards before it is shipped out. I check each mandrel on the lathe for straightness with a dial indicator. Each mandrel has .002 or less of run out when shipped. The mandrels are repeatedly checked to run straight and true then polished prior to shipment.

These mandrels are designed and specifically made for turning cork, EVA and wood grips. These mandrels are 14” long with a shallow shoulder cut 1” long at one end and will accept a 60 degree live center at the other end. Each mandrel is made by using hardened steel. The 1” long shallow shoulder will butt up against the chuck jaw face and prevent the mandrel from slipping through the chuck and loosening when pressure is applied from the tailstock.

The 14 inch length of these mandrels will accommodate most grips commonly used on fly, spinning and casting rods. The shorter mandrel also helps on the flex of the mandrels. If you need a longer or shorter length, please contact us for custom sizes. Please be careful not to drop or bang them around, as this can bend them enough to prevent perfectly concentric turning.

These mandrels are 14” long with a shallow shoulder cut 1” long at one end and will accept a 60 degree live center at the threaded end. Each mandrel is made using hardened steel. The 1” long shallow shoulder will butt up against the chuck jaw face and prevent the mandrel from slipping through the chuck and loosening when pressure is applied from the tailstock.

The Threaded TK Mandrels has a small taper on the threaded end and the threads have also been polish so your grip project is easy to install and remove on the mandrel.

The Threaded TK Mandrels come with all the hardware needed to mount your grip project: a two piece collar stop with allen wrench, two brass bushings and two jam nuts to safely lock your work.

Blank Tester

This tool was design by Bobby Feazel at Shockwave Rods and is quite innovative and is great for comparing blanks for full loads or can be used with the CCS System. The design allows you to mount 2 rod blanks at a time for comparison if needed and the rollers on the tool are adjustable to accommodate different size blanks.

The tool can be used many ways, if you have a customer that wants a rod built just like the rod he has had for year but the rod he has has no specification on it, with this tool you can use his rod and compare with blanks until you fine the blank you want.

This tool works great for experimenting with blanks, if you trim off or extend the blank butt or if you trim the tip you can use this tool to see how this affect your rod blank and what changes will have on you blank.
